Spanish authorities are investigating a brutal massacre aboard a vessel carrying hundreds of illegal migrants from Africa to the Canary Islands.
On Aug. 25, nearly 250 sub-Saharans aboard an overloaded canoe were ‘rescued’ by the Spanish Coast Guard off the coast of Western Sahara and transported some 270 miles to the Canaries.
The Africans were distributed among a variety of reception centers on the islands to await asylum processing and possible relocation to mainland Europe, OK Diario reports.
In the days since, officials have learned that dozens of Africans may have been slaughtered during the journey and thrown overboard.
Survivors say 20 to 30 young Africans committed a variety of crimes aboard the ramshackle vessel, including robbery, assaults, and sabotage of supplies.
After two weeks at sea, the group of thugs began accusing fellow passengers of witchcraft — then shooting them and tossing their bodies into the Atlantic.
Authorities now believe up to 72 victims may have been slaughtered by the suspects, who are currently roaming free in various communities on the islands.
Investigators are working to identify the suspects and arrests are expected imminently.
