Ryan Wesley Routh, the man who attempted to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump in 2024 at his golf course in Palm Beach, Fla., was sentenced to life in prison.

US Southern District Judge Aileen Cannon on Wednesday announced Routh would serve a life sentence plus 84 months, rejecting his lawyers’ pleas for leniency.

“[H]e took steps over the course of months to assassinate a major Presidential candidate, demonstrated the will to kill anybody in the way, and has since expressed neither regret nor remorse to his victims,” Judge Cannon wrote in a sentencing memorandum, adding his crimes “undeniably warrant a life sentence.”

Routh was found guilty on five charges last September, including an attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime, both of which carry maximum life sentence penalties.

Routh in September 2024 reportedly set up a sniper’s nest near the sixth hole of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach as Trump played the course, when he was discovered by a Secret Service agent who saw the barrel of his rifle poking through bushes.

After Routh was captured following his failed assassination attempt, internet sleuths uncovered his past as an activist and recruiter to help Ukraine’s war effort against Russia.
