Police said a Muslim father-and-son duo targeted a Jewish celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.
Now, despite Australia having some of the most strict gun laws in the world, PM Albanese said his cabinet will strengthen gun laws and begin a national firearms registry to reduce the number of gun licenses permitted and how long they’re valid.
“Tougher gun laws include limits on the number of guns that can be used or licensed by individuals. A review of licenses over a period of time, people’s circumstances change. People can be radicalized over a period of time. Licenses should not be in perpetuity,” he said.
Albanese also mentioned the threat of “right-wing extremist groups” despite the fact that the Bondi Beach shooters were Muslim and two Islamic State flags were reportedly found in their vehicle.
American politician Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) also called for more anti-gun legislation in the U.S. after the Australia attack.
U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) accurately pointed out, “Australia already has some of the world’s most restrictive gun laws Those laws didn’t prevent today’s shooting They just left the (unarmed) victims completely defenseless This couldn’t be more tone deaf.”
In total, 40 people were hospitalized due to the shooting, with the 50-year-old father being killed at the scene and his 24-year-old son in critical condition after being shot by police.
A survivor of the attack said four police officers on the scene failed to act and “froze” for around 20 minutes before a heroic citizen tackled one of the shooters and took his firearm, which caused police to finally engage with the suspects.
“For 20 minutes. They shoot, shoot. Change magazines. And just shoot,” the witness stated. “Twenty minutes, there was four policemen there. Nobody give fire back. Nothing. Like they froze. I don’t understand why.”
Images of female officers with their hands up and hiding behind vehicles were spread online following the attack.
The good Samaritan who grabbed the rifle of one shooter was shot twice during the melee and is recovering in a hospital.
Another bystander was filmed stomping the head of one gunman as police pinned down the suspects.
Police also found explosive devices in the deceased gunman’s vehicle and revealed one of the shooters was on Australia’s Security Intelligence Organization watchlist but wasn’t deemed “an immediate threat.”
