An illegal alien unleashed into the U.S. by the Biden regime was on the run for weeks before being arrested for killing an American citizen in a hit-and-run crash in North Carolina, authorities say.
The tragedy unfolded just before 8 p.m. on Mar. 11 in a rural part of Pitt County.
Chris Babcock, 62, was riding a motorcycle near his hometown of Winterville when an SUV turned left in front of him.
Babcock was thrown off his motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries in the ensuing collision.
The driver of the SUV fled the scene and remained at large until Mar. 25.
Erasto Lopez-Gomez, 25, was arrested by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office and charged with hit-and-run causing serious injury or death.
He is being held on $2 million bond.
Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Lopez-Gomez, a Mexican national who is in the U.S. illegally.
In March 2024, Lopez-Gomez was caught by U.S. Border Patrol after illegally crossing the southern border near Tucson, Arizona, and subsequently released into the interior.
“This criminal illegal alien should have NEVER been in our country and able to kill Christopher Babcock,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated in a press release.
“The Biden Administration’s catch and release policies let this criminal into our community, and now a widow is mourning the loss of her husband. This is the second hit-and-run by an illegal alien just this week. These preventable tragedies are the result of the previous administration’s open border policies.”
Christopher Babcock is survived by his wife, sister, and two stepchildren.
“I’m broken. This person took my life that day as well,” said his widow, Donna Babcock.
“I watched the video that my husband recorded and I literally watched my husband die.”
“My husband was a kind, funny, generous person who would literally give you the shirt off his back. He loved his community. He loved his friends. He loved his family,” she said. “And he was very safety-conscious on his motorcycle. He had been riding since he was like 15.”
Illegal alien drivers continue to destroy American lives on a near-daily basis.
