In a landmark verdict this week, a New Mexico jury found Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, liable for misleading the public about the safety of its platforms for children.
The court ordered Meta to pay $375 million for violating the state’s consumer protection laws, determining that the company knowingly designed addictive features, concealed risks to children’s mental health, and failed to adequately protect young users from sexual exploitation and harmful content.
