GOP Texas Senator John Cornyn announced on Thursday that the FBI granted his request for the Bureau to help Texas law enforcement track down the state’s Democrat politicians who fled for blue states in order to block a redistricting vote.
Cornyn had written a letter to Patel on Tuesday, encouraging the FBI to assist state law enforcement in tracking down and arresting the Democrat politicians who fled the state for Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts.
“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats. I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for the federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable for fleeing Texas. We cannot allow these rogue legislators to avoid their constitutional responsibilities,” Cornyn said.
The senator also joined “The Mark Davis Show” Thursday, telling the audience, “They [Democrats] got to come back home sometime … it’s not going to be successful. They’re not going to be able to ultimately escape their responsibility. It’s a stunt.”
Governor Abbott posted to đť•Ź Thursday, saying the state’s DPS and FBI are going to take the on-the-run Democrat politicians “directly to the Texas Capitol” when they’re apprehended.
“Those who received benefits for skipping a vote face removal from office and potential bribery charges. In Texas, there are consequences for your actions,” he wrote.
Abbott, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) and Cornyn have also called on the rogue leftist politicians to be arrested for obstructing the redistricting vote.
The redistricting battle has become a nationwide topic, with blue states threatening to redistrict in order to combat Texas as the 2026 midterm elections are just around the corner.
According to former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder, the redistricting fight will also affect the 2028 presidential election, telling MSNBC earlier this week Democrats could refuse to certify the election if they lose the race.
Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows gave the Democrat politicians until Friday to come back to Austin and take part in the vote, but it looks like they’re going to hold out and force the Trump and Abbott administrations to physically bring them to the Lone Star State.
Paxton on Tuesday stated the Democrats who broke quorum by refusing to perform their legislative duties and instead abandoned their offices are guilty of abandoning their elected offices and may seek judicial orders declaring they have vacated their offices.
The AG cited a ruling by the Supreme Court of Texas forbidding “the minority faction in the legislature to improperly interfere with the legislative majority’s prerogative to conduct business,” warning the Democrat politicians could lose their seats if they don’t come back in time.
