Radical Democrat lawmakers are seeking another government shutdown in January to strip Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of its funding, in response to the fatal shooting of activist Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Breitbart reports, “a growing number of Democrats are demanding restrictions on ICE operations and are considering withholding support for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding as the January 31 deadline approaches.”
“Democrats cannot vote for a DHS budget that doesn’t restrain the growing lawlessness of this agency,” remarked Sen. Chris Murphy in a post on X.
His sentiment was echoed by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who posted, “We can’t just keep authorizing money for these illegal killers. That’s what they are, this rogue force.”
Rep. Delia Ramirez said the expiration of the continuing resolution for government funding “is our opportunity.”
Rep. Ro Khanna spoke to Axios and said the ICE agent who shot Good should be arrested, and called for organized opposition to “hundreds of billions of dollars going to a lawless agency.”
Radicals are likely to butt heads with party leadership in Congress, which has indicated a shutdown is “not on the table.”
Last year’s 43-day government shutdown—the longest in American history—ended after Democrats finally caved on various spending demands, including healthcare subsidies and funding for illegal immigrants.
However, because the Democrat leadership achieved some of its goals, there may be fewer incentives to avoid another.
Breitbart notes that the Democrats appear to be adopting a strategy “centered on chaos” ahead of the midterms, as they seek to portray the Trump administration as lawless and violent.
“The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and state Governor Tim Walz said state police and the National Guard would be ready to protect Minnesotans against “rogue federal agent[s].”
On Wednesday, Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman, was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighbourhood in south Minneapolis.
Good, who is reported to have been a “legal observer” documenting immigration enforcement, blocked the road with her SUV. When asked to move, she attempted to drive away, but was shot by an officer whom she struck with her vehicle.
The President and Vice President have both defended the shooting as self-defense, calling it a “tragedy of [Good’s] own making.”
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem revealed that the officer who shot Good had previously been hit and dragged by an illegal alien attempting to flee apprehension in a vehicle. The officer was seriously injured and required hospitalization.
There have been angry protests across Minneapolis in response to Good’s death, with calls for them to spread nationwide.
