A man who campaigned for GOP gubernatorial candidate Doc Pete Chambers was found dead in a field last week, less than one week before the Republican primary election is set to be held.
Reports state police in Killeen responded to a disturbance call and found Brandon James Petree, 35, shot and unresponsive.
“Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious male in a nearby field suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” Killeen PD wrote in an update.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a 9-1-1 caller reported hearing arguing followed by multiple gunshots. One person has been detained in connection with this incident.”
Chambers lamented the death of his staffer on social media, writing, “I have no words to describe what a loss this is to our team and so many others.”

The Texas Republican Party primaries will take place on March 3, 2026.
Despite Abbott essentially having the race sealed, Chambers, a former green beret and US Army lieutenant colonel, has run a formidable grassroots campaign managing to beat out other Republican hopefuls in polls, positioning him as the runner-up candidate.
Doc Chambers has also been endorsed by former Trump national security advisor Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, as reported by National File.
