An entire team of five Al-Jazeera journalists has been killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.
Israel’s military targeted Anas Al Sharif, claiming he was in charge of a Hamas cell and was directing rocket attacks against Israel.
Al Sharif was with the journalists in a tent near Shifa Hospital in Gaza City when he was hit. An official at the hospital and two other people were also killed in the strike.
Al Jazeera called Al Sharif “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists,” Al and said the attack was a “desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza.”
“Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues were among the last remaining voices in Gaza conveying the tragic reality to the world.”
The news network denied that Al Sharif was connected to Hamas.
He was previously part of a Reuters team that won a Pulitzer Prize last year for their coverage of the Israel-Hamas war.
In a statement, the Israeli military said Al Sharif was the head of a Hamas cell and “was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF (Israeli) troops.”
Al Sharif, who had 500,000 followers on X, posted just minutes before being killed that Israeli forces had been bombarding Gaza City non-stop for more than two hours.
The Committee to Protect Journalists says at least 186 journalists have been killed conflict so far.
