An Oklahoma high school principal is being hailed as a hero after tackling a gunman and preventing a potentially deadly shooting last week.

Surveillance footage shows Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore open a door and charge at 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins as he entered the building with a pair of handguns and pointed one of them at a student sitting on a bench.

Moore is then seen pinning down Hawkins until an assistant principal assists him in disarming the suspect.

The principal was shot in the leg during the fight and is now recovering.

The surveillance camera video also showed a person opening the door for Hawkins to enter the building, but Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) have not yet determined whether or not that individual was working with the shooter, according to KFOR News 4.

An arrest affidavit for Hawkins said he “walked into the lobby of the school that afternoon, told everyone to hit the ground and tried to shoot one student but was thwarted by a malfunctioning weapon.”

Hawkins reportedly addressed the firearm’s malfunction and started firing at another student but missed, and as both students pleaded for mercy, Moore entered the scene and tackled the shooter.

Moore issued a statement thanking the community for “an outpouring of love and support.”

According to prosecutors, Hawkins used to attend the school and expressed wanting to “conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did.”

The suspect reportedly stole the handguns from his father and intended to shoot students, staff and Principal Moore before taking his own life.

Hawkins is sitting in jail with a $1 million bail and is being charged with “shooting with intent to kill, feloniously pointing a firearm and carrying a weapon to a public assembly,” according to court records.
