Former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on charges that he mishandled classified information.

A 26-page indictment from a grand jury in Maryland detailed the 18-count indictment against Bolton stemming from his 2020 book, The Room Where It Happened, A White House Memoir, that contained highly classified intel violating his NDA and possibly compromising national security.

The indictment claims Bolton from April 2018 to Sept. 2019, during his tenure as national security advisor, “sent diary-like entries to [two individuals with no security clearances] that contained information classified up to the TOP SECRET/SCI level.”

“Bolton wrote many of these diary-like entries by transcribing his handwritten notes from his day’s activities into word processing documents, which he then electronically sent to [the individuals] through a commercial non-governmental messaging application,” the indictment states.

The notes appeared to be laying the groundwork for Bolton’s book.

Federal officials initially flagged the book’s manuscript for containing “significant amounts of highly classified information that needed to be removed.”

Further complicating matters for Bolton, his representative notified the FBI in 2021 that a hacker he believed to be working on behalf of Iran “had obtained unauthorized access to one of Bolton’s personal email accounts.”

“At no point did Bolton tell the FBI that, while he was the National Security Advisor, he had used the hacked email account to send Individuals 1 and 2 documents relating to the national defense, including classified information,” the indictment states. “Nor did he tell the FBI that the hackers now had this information.”

Bolton will reportedly surrender himself to a federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, on Friday, according to CNN.

The indictment comes as the FBI conducted an AM raid of Bolton’s Bethesda home in August reportedly related to a classified documents investigation.

Bolton’s federal charges follow last week’s indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James on mortgage and bank fraud charges, and come on the heels of last month’s grand jury indictment of ex-FBI Director James Comey on charges he lied to Congress.

President Donald Trump was asked about Bolton’s indictment during a press conference Thursday, responding, “I didn’t know that. You’re telling me for the first time! I think he’s, you know, a bad person. I think he’s a bad guy. It’s too bad. But, that’s the way it goes, right?”
