Hamas has signalled its willingness to accept a new US-brokered truce, raising hopes of an end to its conflict with Israel.

The group issued an official statement in which it said it was prepared “with all seriousness” to restart negotiations.

“The Hamas movement has completed its internal consultations as well as discussions with Palestinian factions and forces regarding the latest proposal by the mediators to halt the aggression against our people in Gaza,” the statement reads.

“The movement has delivered its response to the brotherly mediators, which was characterized by a positive spirit. Hamas is fully prepared, with all seriousness, to immediately enter a new round of negotiations on the mechanism for implementing this framework.”

Significant obstacles to peace still remain.

A Palestinian official told Reuters that humanitarian aid is a concern, as well as access to Gaza via Rafah crossing into Egypt and the need for a timeline for withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

The Hamas statement comes days after President Donald Trump announced a “final proposal” for a 60-day ceasefire. President Trump said he wanted a speedy response to the proposal, as he seeks to bring the conflict to a close.

“My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

“The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal. I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better—IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet President Trump in Washington on Monday. President Trump has said he intends to be “very firm” with his Israeli counterpart.

The war between Israel and Hamas began after a series of attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which killed around 1,200 Israelis and saw around 250 captured and held as hostages. Over 50,000 Palestinians are reckoned to have been killed in the Israeli response.
