Image Credit: NYPD An elderly veteran is fighting for his life after he and another man were thrown onto active train tracks at a New York City subway station by a suspect who is in the U.S. illegally, according to reports.
The horrifying attack unfolded at around noon on Sunday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
A male suspect strolling down a platform at the Lexington Avenue–63rd Street station shoved two men at random, causing them to fall onto the track bed, NYPD says.
Good Samaritans quickly helped the victims back onto the platform before a train arrived.
POV footage shot by one of the victims, identified as 31-year-old Jhon Rodriguez, shows the suspect casually strolling away as other commuters scramble to assist the injured men.
Richard Williams, a 83-year-old Air Force veteran and grandfather, reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries, including several fractures and bleeding on the brain.
“My father, Richard, is on a respirator in the ICU in the hospital. That’s all we are going to say,” his daughter told the New York Post.
The suspect remained on the loose until Tuesday morning when U.S. Marshals and NYPD arrested Bairon Hernandez, 34, at a Brooklyn homeless shelter.
Hernandez, an illegal alien from Honduras, has been charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, and reckless endangerment.
Rodriguez suffered an unspecified arm injury that left him in a sling.
An investigation is ongoing.
