Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Ca.) posted an AI video of President Trump, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller being arrested in response to a social media post by the White House celebrating the arrest of criminal illegal aliens.

𝕏 user @capeandcowell accurately noted Newsom previously “tried to pass a law that made it illegal to post political AI videos. The very thing he’s doing now,” adding, “Rules for thee but not for me.”
Newsom signed AB 730 in 2019, making illegal “to distribute manipulated videos that aim to discredit a political candidate and deceive voters within 60 days of an election.”
The governor also signed in September of 2024 three bills “to combat the harmful use of deepfakes in political ads and other content.”
AB 2655, which goes into effect next month, mandates social media platforms to take down flagged election-related deepfake or AI videos and restrict their spread.
While Newsom’s post doesn’t violate his state’s laws since there is no election within the next two months and the video wasn’t a political advertisement, it does reek of hypocrisy.
