While no deal was reached Tuesday, Reuters reported that an unnamed U.S. official said Iran would make detailed proposals in the next two weeks to close gaps in the nuclear talks.
“Progress was made, but there are still a lot of details to discuss,” the U.S. official said. “The Iranians said they would come back in the next two weeks with detailed proposals to address some of the open gaps in our positions.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the two sides reached an understanding on the main “guiding principles” of nuclear deal negotiations.
“Different ideas have been presented, these ideas have been seriously discussed, ultimately we’ve been able to reach a general agreement on some guiding principles,” Araqchi told Iranian media after the talks concluded in Geneva.
Vice President JD Vance told Fox News following the negotiations that while he hopes peaceful diplomacy can prevail, President Donald Trump has a lot of options that he’s willing to use, including the military option.
Reporting from Geneva, Switzerland, journalist Osama Bin Javaid detailed the mood of the meeting:
There was a positive undertone in the comments from the Iranian foreign minister.
But [the two sides] are not anywhere close to calling this a deal or calling off the huge [U.S.] military build-up in the Middle East.
And that is why Middle Eastern countries, energy markets and everybody is watching this very closely.
While these chairs are being drawn for diplomacy, the chessboard for war has already been set.
Iran’s Dictator Ali Khamenei shows unwillingness to refrain from nuclear energy development (note the nuclear deal is in regard to nuclear weapons, but nuclear energy opens the door to nuclear enrichment systems that could be used for weapons).
The Americans say, ‘Let’s negotiate over your nuclear energy, and the result of the negotiation is supposed to be that you do not have this energy!’
If that’s the case, there is no room for negotiation; but if negotiations are truly to take place, determining the outcome of the negotiations in advance is a wrong and foolish act.
Khamenei issued a barrage of posts Tuesday, challenging the U.S. while defiantly defending nuclear technology as well as missiles.

Following the meeting with U.S. officials Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Iran will be willing to allow outside nations to confirm that they are not developing nuclear weapons.
“We are absolutely not seeking nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian said. “If anyone wants to verify this, we are open to such verification to take place.”
Pezeshkian went on to affirm the Iranian interest in non-weaponized nuclear technology, something Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is completely opposed to. On Sunday Netanyahu said “The first is that all enriched material has to leave Iran … There should be no enrichment capability – not stopping the enrichment process, but dismantling the equipment and the infrastructure that allows [them] to enrich.”
“However, we do not accept that we should be prevented from using [nuclear] science and knowledge to address our illnesses and to advance our industry and agriculture,” Pezeshkian said.
The Iranian President went into the negotiations saying that while he hopes for results, he doesn’t just want to talk for the sake of talking – likely implying Tehran is willing to make a deal unless the deal proposed to them is too one-sided.
“These negotiations are being conducted with full coordination and authorization from the supreme leader, and our goal is to truly resolve issues, not talk for the sake of talking,” he said. “We are seriously seeking to achieve a result and hope that this process will lead to tangible results.”
Al Jazeera reported on the tough decision the Islamic Republic faces:
Iran facing ‘existential dilemma’, expert says
That’s according to Ali Fathollah-Nejad, director of the Berlin-based Centre for Middle East and Global Order.
“Giving in to US demands could bring sanctions relief that it would desperately need to stabilise the regime and fund its repressive apparatus,” he told the AFP news agency.
“However, any significant concessions on the nuclear, ballistic missile and regional proxies issues would sensitively undermine its ideological and military standing.”
Trump has remained optimistic of reaching a nuclear deal with Iran over the last year.
Trump was unhappy with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and withdrew from it during his first term in office. He has since been seeking to enact a new agreement.
Notably, this 2015 ‘Iran nuclear deal’ involved President Barack Obama shipping $400 million in cash on pallets to Tehran in exchange for the promise they will refrain from developing nuclear weapons.
“No other transaction in U.S. history has involved a planeload of bills, say diplomatic historians, raising questions about payment timed to help free prisoners,” the Times of Israel said in 2016.
“Iran state TV announced an $80 million bounty for President Trump’s head on Sunday following the targeting strike of Qassam Soleimani despite the fact the nation is suffering under crippling sanctions,” Jamie White said in an article on Infowars in 2020. “Given the crushing U.S. economic sanctions bearing down on Iran, how is the Islamic nation able to offer such a large reward for Trump’s assassination? The answer may lie in the $1.7 billion payment former President Obama sent to Iran, including $400 million delivered on pallets in a C-130 as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) in 2015. The ‘compromise’ payment was made as part of the $150 billion sanction relief to Iran for the nuclear deal despite the fact both Obama and former Secretary of State John Kerry outright admitted some of that money would be used to fund terrorism.”
