The Klyuchevskoy volcano, located on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, started erupting Wednesday morning after a powerful 8.8 earthquake off the coast of the peninsula caused tsunami warnings in Japan and Hawaii.
Klyuchevskoy is the largest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere, and according to The Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service, “a descent of burning hot lava” was observed on its western slope as it exploded.
There are 29 active volcanoes in the Kamchatka region, which is one of the world’s most seismically active volcanic regions, according to NASA Earth Observatory.
Now, some experts are worried the Pacific Ring of Fire could see more seismic activity in the coming days and weeks following the earthquake, tsunami and volcano eruption.
The Ring of Fire recently entered an era of unprecedented geological instability as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 23% spike in earthquakes in 2024 compared to 2023.
