Attorney General Pam Bondi drew scrutiny Monday after claiming the DOJ would pursue charges against people espousing hate speech, with many asserting deceased conservative activist Charlie Kirk would likely have opposed such measures.

Speaking to the Katie Miller Podcast about the slew of abominable social media posts from leftists celebrating Kirk’s death, Bondi stated:

“There’s free speech and then there’s hate speech, and there is no place, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society…We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech…”

The US attorney general was taken to the woodshed over the remarks, with many calling for her to be ousted and pointing out Kirk stood against so-called “hate speech” laws as an infringement on free speech and the First Amendment.

In an X post last year, Kirk wrote, “Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”

“This is really outrageous and infuriating,” remarked The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh. “We’re already having a lot of success fighting back against the leftists celebrating Charlie’s death. We don’t need Pam Bondi swooping in to throw the entire conversation off the rails by completely missing our point. And having a ‘hate speech’ crackdown in the name of Charlie Kirk — a man who absolutely rejected “hate speech” laws — is especially grotesque.”

“Pam Bondi’s noxious claim that there’s a ‘hate speech’ exception to ‘free speech’ – and you can thus be prosecuted for it – is not only a total distortion of the 1st Am’s clear language. It’s also a theory SCOTUS has rejected, and was the foundation of left-liberal censorship,” commented journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Following the backlash, Bondi addressed her remarks on Tuesday morning, clarifying the hate speech she was referring to meant threats of violence.

“Hate speech that crosses the line into threats of violence is NOT protected by the First Amendment. It’s a crime. For far too long, we’ve watched the radical left normalize threats, call for assassinations, and cheer on political violence. That era is over,” Bondi wrote.

“You cannot call for someone’s murder. You cannot swat a Member of Congress. You cannot dox a conservative family and think it will be brushed off as ‘free speech.’ These acts are punishable crimes, and every single threat will be met with the full force of the law. Free speech protects ideas, debate, even dissent but it does NOT and will NEVER protect violence.”

Asked about Bondi’s apparent vow to target people for hate speech on Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump quipped to a reporter: “We’d probably go after people like you because you treat me so unfairly. It’s hate. You have a lot of hate in your heart…”
