President Donald Trump posted a lengthy message to Truth Social on Wednesday, suddenly supporting FISA warrantless spying after years of opposing it due to the government abusing the law to spy on his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.
However, the president did explain why he sees a renewal of FISA 702 “foreign collection” necessary despite the fact that he was once a victim of it and could potentially be victimized by the law again in the future if Democrats were to regain power.
“I am working very hard with our Great Speaker, Mike Johnson, along with Chairman Jim Jordan and Chairman Rick Crawford, to get a clean extension of FISA 702 through the House of Representatives this week,” Trump wrote. “I am asking Republicans to UNIFY, and vote together on the test vote to bring a clean Bill to the floor. We need to stick together when this Bill comes before the House Rules Committee today to keep it CLEAN!”
“I was a victim of the worst and most illegal abuse of FISA in our Nation’s History, by Radical Left Lunatics, who lied to the FISA Court to spy on my 2016 Presidential Campaign in their attempt to RIG the Election in favor of Crooked Hillary Clinton,” he added. “Their use of this instrument in the 2020 Presidential Election was even worse! When the Dirty Cop, James Comey, the failed Head of the FBI, went after me, he was using FISA Title I, the Domestic Collection, not FISA 702, the Foreign Collection, which needs to be extended today.”
After noting FISA was used against him and others, the president explained, “While parts of FISA were illegally and unfortunately used against me in the Democrats’ disgraceful Witch Hunt and Attack in the RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA Hoax, and perhaps would be used against me in the future, I am willing to risk that as a Citizen in order to do what is right for our Country. Our Military desperately needs FISA 702, and it is one of the reasons we have had such tremendous SUCCESS on the battlefield, both in Venezuela and Iran.”
Next, POTUS said his second administration has been “aggressively” working on FISA Reforms “to keep Americans safe, while protecting our sacred Civil Liberties guaranteed by our Great Constitution.”
The ongoing Iran war was clearly President Trump’s key reason for supporting a renewal of FISA 702, saying, “it is extremely important to our Military,” and that many Generals “consider it VITAL.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who has been a vocal critic of FISA abuse, also pointed out the current House proposal is “a short-term reauthorization at a time when we’re in a military operation in Iran,” and that “56 different reforms” were put in place two years ago.
Ex-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a screenshot of a 2024 Trump Truth Social message where he wrote, “KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME AND MANY OTHERS. THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN.”
The former Georgia congresswoman failed to acknowledge Trump’s admission of the fact that he previously opposed FISA and provided a reasonable explanation for his change in tune.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said he’ll “be voting NO on final passage of the FISA 702 Reauthorization Bill if it does not include a warrant provision and other reforms to protect US citizens’ right to privacy.”
Showing he’s open to voting “yes” on the bill if reforms are made, Massie said he offered three amendments to fix the program on Tuesday, but they were “not allowed.”
Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) questioned whether House Republicans will “cave to the Trump pressure” and “violate their long-stated principals” by voting to reauthorize FISA “without constitutional protections.”
“Is it ok if our guys are the ones doing the spying and trampling on the 4th Amendment?” he asked.
Another Republican congressman, Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio, also objected to reauthorizing FISA 702 “without any reforms to protect privacy.”
Several other political commentators also criticized Trump’s post.
