Trump Anticipates Chinese Leader “Will Give Me A Big, Fat Hug”

While the U.S. is "opening" the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, it was mulling "closing" the strait on Monday. Iran had kept the strait partially closed since the war began.

The last time Trump had met Xi was in October. There was no hugging however, Trump applied pressure on his Chinese counterpart with the announcement that the U.S. will resume nuclear weapons testing right before the meeting began. The U.S. has yet to test a nuclear device.

President Donald Trump had a very unique announcement regarding China’s relationship to the Iran war. In a post Wednesday morning, the President said China will not be arming Iran, that Beijing is very happy Washington is “permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz” and that the nation’s leader Xi Jinping will “will give me a big, fat, hug” during their upcoming visit May 14 and 15.

China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz. I am doing it for them, also – And the World. This situation will never happen again. They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran. President Xi will give me a big, fat, hug when I get there in a few weeks. We are working together smartly, and very well! Doesn’t that beat fighting??? BUT REMEMBER, we are very good at fighting, if we have to – far better than anyone else!!! President DJT

While the U.S. is “opening” the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, it was mulling “closing” the strait on Monday. Iran had kept the strait partially closed since the war began.

While China may not be supplying Iran with weapons, Russia has been sharing targeting intelligence and sending weapons shipments to the Islamic Republic, just as the U.S. has been doing for Ukraine.

Russia and Iran signed a joint defense agreement in April 2025. Early into the Iran war Moscow offered to cease the intel sharing with Tehran if Washington ceases it with Kiev, but the offer was not accepted.

Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he had sent Xi a letter asking him to not send weapons to Iran, to which the Chinese leader replied that he was “not doing that”:

“He responded to a letter that I wrote because I had heard that China is giving weapons to — I mean, you’re seeing it all over the place — to Iran,” Trump told FOX Business’ “Mornings With Maria” on Wednesday.

“And I wrote him a letter asking him not to do that, and he wrote me a letter saying that essentially he’s not doing that.”

Trump, in the interview taped Tuesday, did not say when the letters were exchanged. Last week, he threatened countries with an immediate 50% tariff if they supplied Iran with weapons.

Trump travels to Beijing in mid-May where he will meet Xi in person. Bloomberg detailed what the two are likely to discuss:

The rescheduled meeting will pose a fresh test of how comfortable Trump and Xi are with the status quo on trade, US support for Taiwan and whether there will be any fallout for the US strikes on Iran that spurred a spike in oil prices.

Officials from the two countries, including US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, met in Paris in March, a gathering intended to lay the groundwork for the summit. Both sides expressed a willingness to continue to stabilize their relationship after a tit-for-tat tariff war that saw levies surge in 2025 and spark fears of a global economic downturn. The countries are discussing a possible trade enforcement panel to help address disputes, a mechanism Greer has called “a US-China Board of Trade.”
