Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) told Kennedy about one of his constituents whose grandson died of brain cancer at six-years-old and asked about alleged cuts in cancer research funding.
RFK responded with empathy, saying, “The worst thing that can happen to a human being is to lose a child or a grandchild. My heart goes out to that family,” and pointing out the one agency that recently received a budget boost was the National Cancer Institution.
He then invited the congressman to call him so the pair can look into any cancer research programs that may have potentially had their budgets cut.
During another portion of the hearing, RFK Jr. called out the Biden administration for excluding religious families, specifically Christians, from becoming foster parents.
“President Trump and First Lady Trump’s vision for foster care is one family for every one child. Currently, there are two children for every available foster family because the Biden Administration was excluding an entire class of foster families due to their religious beliefs. This is unacceptable, and we are changing that,” he wrote on social media.
Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Calif.) accused Kennedy of doing “an incredibly harmful thing to our community” by eliminating the “mandatory Hepatitis B vaccine for newborns,” claiming it disproportionately harms Asian Americans.
Kennedy replied by pointing out babies “essentially have zero risk” of contracting the disease and that parents can still choose to give their child the shot if they choose.
Regarding the hundreds of thousands of children who went missing after being illegally brought into the U.S. during the Biden administration, Kennedy said HHS has located 138,000 so far.
The HHS secretary also called out the Biden admin for restricting peptides despite several court rulings that they should be treated like supplements, which are “not supposed to be regulated.”
When Texas Democrat Congressman Lloyd Doggett suggested Kennedy is protecting government fraudsters, RFK went off, saying the administration has done more to combat fraud than any other White House in history.
Another House member praised the Trump administration’s increase in health care investment for rural communities and asked Secretary Kennedy how HHS can make more improvements.
The health secretary also said President Trump is “absolutely committed, more than any president we’ve ever seen” to fixing rural healthcare.
