President Donald Trump on Thursday stated he’s “trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon” after 34 years of the nations refusing to speak with each other.
The president’s attempt at getting the countries to engage in dialogue comes amid years of Israeli strikes in Lebanon as the Netanyahu government attacks Hezbollah forces, often killing and injuring Lebanese civilians.
POTUS then issued a second Thursday message, saying he spoke with Lebanon President Joseph Aoun and Israel Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and the two men agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5 P.M. EST.
“The two Countries met for the first time in 34 years here in Washington, D.C., with our Great Secretary of State, Marco Rubio,” President Trump wrote. “I have directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, together with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Razin’ Caine, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a Lasting PEACE. It has been my Honor to solve 9 Wars across the World, and this will be my 10th, so let’s, GET IT DONE!”
Trump then announced Netanyahu and Aoun will invited to the White House for an in-person meeting.
While the move does signal a positive update for the Middle East, the Israelis are not known for staying true to ceasefires.
It’s also possible the IDF continues attacking Hezbollah militants in Lebanon because the group is separate from the Lebanese government.
Just days before Trump’s announcement, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told MS Now that SHE has been “advocating behind the scenes for several months” for Israel to work with the current Lebanese government to take out Hezbollah.
“They are trying to set up a government in Lebanon that can deal with the threat that Hezbollah poses to Lebanon internally,” Clinton said. “So, rather than making their task even harder, work with this new government in Lebanon. See how far you can help them to go to disarm Hezbollah.”
