Image Credit: NurPhoto / Contributor / Getty On Monday the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed that Western non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are preparing to stage a coup in Belarus, a nation that is closely allied with Russia.
“NGOs in Western nations, including ‘democratizing’ structures, agencies and foundations in the U.S. as well as Britain, Germany, Poland and other European nations are building up assets to again attempt to destabilize the situation and change the constitutional order in Belarus,” the statement said.
The spy agency does not believe this attempt at a color revolution will be successful however, as the citizens of Belarus did not latch onto opposition activists central to the protests which took place in 2020.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the central figure of the 2020 protests, and other people currently based in Lithuania and Poland “have demonstrated in the past years an absolute inability to influence political processes in their home nation in any way,” the agency said.
Belarusians have also seen the destructive results similar color revolutions had on Eastern European nations, such as “the examples of Ukraine, Moldova and other nations destroyed in the name of Western geopolitical ambitions under slogans calling for the protection of democracy and human rights.”

RT detailed the geopolitical relationship between Belarus and the U.S. since the Trump administration has came to power:
The warning follows a thaw in the relationship between the Lukashenko government and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. In recent months, Washington secured the release of dozens of Belarusian activists who had been sentenced for their roles in the 2020 riots.
The freed individuals included Tikhanovskaya’s husband Sergey, who was barred from running in the 2020 election and jailed for inciting an insurgency. Since his release, he has prodded supporters with video statements complaining that they were failing to donate enough money to the anti-Lukashenko cause.
In September 2025 the SVR claimed the West was planning a color revolution in Serbia and in September 2024 the spy agency claimed the U.S. was preparing a similar coup in Georgia, neither of those claims came to fruition however.
Belarus is a major player in the Russia/Ukraine war. In September 2025 the two nations held joint war game drills and in September 2024 Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko confirmed his country took possession of Russian nuclear weapons.
“I had nuclear warheads deployed here. More than a dozen of them. Many people dismiss it as a joke, saying that ‘nobody brought anything’. We did. The fact that they [opponents] say it’s a joke means they’ve missed it. They haven’t even noticed how we brought them here,” the Belarusian President said.
During that event, Lukashenko warned his adversaries about invading Belarus.
“Using nuclear weapons is a big responsibility. Nobody has pressed the red button after Hiroshima and Nagasaki [the U.S. nuclear bombing of the Japanese cities in 1945],” Lukashenko said. “But I have warned all enemies, ‘friends’ and rivals: if you step on the state border line, the response will be instantaneous. I will not look at nuclear weapons or anything else.”
