At least 24 people are now dead and more than 20 female campers are still unaccounted for after massive flooding in central Texas.
On Friday night, the sheriff of Kerr County confirmed the death toll.
“What I can confirm at this point: We’re at about 24 fatalities,” Sheriff Larry Leitha said during a news conference with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
“We’re not going to be giving out any names at this time. We’re still notifying next of kin.”
Between 23 and 25 girls who had been staying at Camp Mystic on the banks of the Guadalupe River remain unaccounted for.
The Guadalupe river burst its banks catastrophically after months of rainfall in just a few hours raised the water level by more than 20 feet. On Friday morning, the height of the river reached 29 feet, the second highest level on record, surpassing levels seen in 1987, when floods killed ten people near Comfort.
Nearly 240 people have already been rescued, the majority by helicopter.
Governor Abbott has committed state personnel and equipment to aid local authorities in their search and rescue efforts.
“We remain in a search-and-rescue posture right now,” the governor said.
The missions “will continue in the darkness of night. They will be taking place when the sun rises in the morning. They will be nonstop, seeking to find everybody who is unaccounted for.”
Tracking the girls from Camp Mystic is proving a problem, because campers at the site are not allowed to bring phones with them.
President Trump has been in contact with the governor’s office and offered national assistance, the Lt Governor, Dan Patrick, said.
