Courage: The capacity to endure, struggle, and act despite facing extreme danger, pain, or death.

The following events unfolded on the night of January 25, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

8:46 — Outside the Home2 Suites on University Avenue, protesters have blocked the road with trash bins and garbage. Roughly a hundred people are rioting outside the hotel because they believe federal agents are staying there.

9:09 — Agitators are lighting off fireworks and the crowd is growing. They are impeding traffic and controlling the road. The building has been vandalized and militants are writing “F**k ICE” on the windows.

9:19 — Rioters attempting to storm the entrance are met by hotel security. “You got to get out right now,” says an employee as he tries to lock and bar the doors. Strobe lights and noise makers are going off constantly while hotel workers plead with extremists to leave.

“All the staff is local, man,” one of them say.

9:51 — A lone Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officer is trying to assist hotel staff to barricade the entrance. Rioters push, shove, and attack the staff to keep the door open. Projectiles are thrown and reporters are hit with glass bottles and ice bottles.

“F**k you!” militants scream.

The rioters escalate their attack on the building, destroying various objects, spraying graffiti, and hacking at the lighted signage with shovels. Hotel staff continue to be assaulted. Debris is starting to fill the lobby.

Shortly after, the first windows are shattered. There is still only one police officer present.

“Doesn’t seem like more police is expected to come,” a reporter on-scene states at the battle for the lobby rages.

10:52 — Suddenly, three officers from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) charge down the sidewalk tossing tear gas canisters as they barrel into the fray. Explosions go off and the officers head for the hotel entrance.

“Get out of our city, you pieces of s**t!” a rioter screams as another approaches the officers and yells, “I am not scared of your pu**y ass!”

He is promptly incapacitated by a bean bag round fired into his chest.

“GET BACK!” shouts a BOP officer who is now standing alone at the hotel entrance. Clouds of gas envelope the scene. Blood is pouring out of the bottom of the officer’s face mask and both of his bare hands are covered in blood.

“Where is the local PD?! That’s my question to the press. Where is the local PD?” the officer shouts at a crowd of reporters.

“Please, give me some room. It’s me and 30 people. Please, get back.”

The officer briefly pulls down his mask to spit blood on the ground before declining gloves offered by a concerned bystander.

“GET BACK!” the officer bellows at the crowd and then provides instructions to his team inside to not bring any guests out the front.

One of the other officers emerges from inside the hotel and the men guard the entrance together.

It is now nearly 11:00 p.m. and there is no sign of backup. With bloodied hands, the officer uses his cell phone to make a call.

“We need you here,” he says into the phone.

11:04 — The BOP officer steps out of the foyer to confront a rioter. Suddenly, an object is thrown that appears to strike the officer in the head.

11:05 — An ICE Special Response Team pulls up in an armored vehicle. A fresh volley of gas canisters are deployed and the hotel entrance is cleared.

“This is the Minneapolis Police Department. You are all under arrest. Sit down,” a voice booms over a loudspeaker as roughly 100 MPD officers flood the zone and begin detaining individuals.

Three BOP officers charged into danger. They didn’t know the extent of the peril or the size of the crowd, but they didn’t care.

They rushed in to help when no one else would.

Courage.
