On October 16 President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin where the two agreed to hold an in-person meeting in Hungary. While that meeting has since been put on hold, it was not permanently canceled. Both sides say they are unprepared to meet, but seek to meet once they feel ready.

During a meeting between NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and the President on Wednesday at the White House, Trump said holding the Hungary summit with Putin so soon “did not feel right.”

“It did not feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get, so I canceled it,” he said. “But we will do it [the summit] in the future.”

On Thursday Putin concurred with Trump on postponing the event:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that the planned Budapest summit with US counterpart Donald Trump is being postponed. Speaking to journalists on Thursday, he noted that the proposal was initially made by the American side.

The Russian leader admitted that it would have been a mistake to approach the summit without the necessary preparations, suggesting that a meeting might still take place at a later date. Putin emphasized that dialogue is always better than confrontation, arguments, and the continuation of war.

On Thursday the White House imposed sanctions on two major Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. Putin said it’s just another attempt by the West to pressure Russia, but “no self-respecting country ever does anything under pressure,” implying that the pressure is not working on the Kremlin.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington still remains interested in meeting with Moscow to discuss ways in which to end the Ukraine conflict.

“We would still like to meet with the Russians,” Rubio said Wednesday.

On Monday Rubio spoke with Russia’s chief diplomat, Sergey Lavrov about further diplomatic meetings between the two countries. RT reported:

The U.S. State Department later also confirmed the phone call, stating Rubio had emphasized “the importance of upcoming engagements as an opportunity for Moscow and Washington to collaborate on advancing a durable” peace deal between Moscow and Kiev.
