Safe spaces for children are increasingly under threat in Germany, including on playgrounds.
A “stateless man” threatened two 11-year-old boys on a playground in Dortmund with a knife and then robbed them on Friday last week.
The knife-point robbery occurred despite a “knife-carrying ban” in the area. Critics of such policies indicate that there is little preventing criminals from wielding knives in areas where there is a knife ban.

The 47-year-old suspect allegedly approached the boys at 7:50 p.m. on Saturday near Zimmer Street and Prior Street and, under the threat of a knife, grabbed money from one boy’s bag, according to Express news outlet.
The boys ran to report the incident at a local police station.
Based on witness testimony, the police were able to quickly identify the perpetrator. However, police say the man violently resisted arrest.
“Because he continued to exhibit threatening movements toward the officers and had used a knife during the attack, the police ordered him to get down at gunpoint,” Dortmund police stated.
The officers recovered the knife from the man. They also report that he is known to the police for other crimes but was never deported.
The suspect has reportedly been transferred to a psychiatric hospital.
In normally “safe spaces” for children, such as schools or playgrounds, the threats are growing in Germany. In 2023, 38-year-old Berhan S. randomly targeted two girls playing in their schoolyard, aged 7 and 8, in Berlin and proceeded to brutally stab them. The two students, who attended the Protestant School in the multicultural neighborhood of Neukölln, were nearly killed as 30 classmates looked on in horror.
In 2023, a 25-year-old unemployed man with a migration background stabbed a 7-year-old girl five times in the head in Esslingen, Germany. The man said he targeted the child because he thought an adult would be more able to resist his attacks. Another random attack.
On June 10, a little girl had just taken off her backpack and was planning to take a seat for breakfast at the Katharinen School in Esslingen when the man stabbed her with full force five times in the back of the head. The kitchen knife the man used featured a blade 20 centimeters long and penetrated all the way through the girl’s skull.
In France, a Syrian migrant made national headlines for a brutal stabbing attack on a playground in Annecy.
Overall, violence between students in schools is soaring, with 40 percent of suspects listed as foreigners in the statistics. In some high-profile attacks, serious stabbings have been recorded.
