Ukraine summoned Hungary’s ambassador on Wednesday, January 28th, in response to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s claims that Ukrainian politicians were spreading hostile messages about his government to interfere in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said it expressed “strong protest” over what it called false accusations of election interference and urged Budapest to halt what it described as aggressive anti-Ukrainian rhetoric.
Officials warned the statements risk further damaging relations between the two neighbouring countries.
Tensions between Kyiv and Budapest have already been high due to Orbán’s veto to Ukrainian membership until the country meets accession requirements.
The dispute has intensified in recent weeks as Orbán has sharpened his criticism of Ukraine ahead of the April elections in Hungary.
