Image Credit: x screenshot Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi surprisingly cautioned Democrats that they shouldn’t pursue impeachment of President Donald Trump unless he commits egregious violations.
Speaking to USA TODAY Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page, the longtime California Democrat agreed Democrats’ agenda for the next two years should not focus on impeaching the president.
“[J]ust to make sure I understand you, [impeachment] should not be the agenda of Democrats for this last two years?” Page asked.
“No, I mean unless he — if he crosses the border again. But that’s not an incidental thing you say — ‘We’re going to do that.’ No, there has to be cause. There has to be reason,” Pelosi stated.
“We had review. This was a very serious historic thing,” she said of her own two impeachments of the president. “And our founders knew that there could be a rogue president. And that’s why they put impeachment in the Constitution. They didn’t know there’d be a rogue president at the same time a rogue Senate that didn’t have the courage to do the right thing. It was bipartisan in the Senate, but it wasn’t enough.”
Pelosi’s remarks came as Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) last week forced a vote on a resolution to impeach Trump – which was later tabled on a 237 to 140 vote – on claims he incited violence against the “Seditious Six” lawmakers who urged military and intel members to disobey illegal orders.
