“That’s why today I’m taking one more step to protect Americans from the scourge of deadly fentanyl flooding into our country,” Trump stated in the Oval Office. “With this historic executive order I will sign today, we’re formally classifying fentanyl as a Weapon of Mass Destruction, which is what it is. No bomb does what this is doing. 200-300,000 people die every year, that we know of.”

“Illicit fentanyl is closer to a chemical weapon than a narcotic,” the order, posted to the White House website, states. “Two milligrams, an almost undetectable trace amount equivalent to 10 to 15 grains of table salt, constitutes a lethal dose. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses.”
The EO acknowledged how organized criminal networks and Foreign Terrorist Organizations use profits from illicit fentanyl trafficking to fund assassinations, terror acts and insurgencies, and noted the administration’s concern for fentanyl “to be weaponized for concentrated, large-scale terror attacks.”
Trump revealed the EO during an Oval Office meeting surrounded by Cabinet officials, where he honored military servicemen with medals for defending America’s borders.
