CNN host Jake Tapper held Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s feet to the fire this week following her Senate bid announcement, questioning how she’ll appeal to hispanic voters in Texas who she appeared to denigrate in the past.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Lead,” Tapper confronted Rep. Crockett on comments she gave to Vanity Fair last year, reading an excerpt where she appeared to claim hispanic Trump voters have a “slave mentality.”
Reciting Crockett’s comments, which he said had some Democrats “concerned” about her chances, Tapper read, “The immigration thing has always been something that has perplexed me about this community … It almost reminds me of what people would talk about when they would talk about kind of like ‘slave mentality’ and the hate that some slaves would have for themselves. It’s almost like a slave mentality that they have.”
Tapper then asked Crockett, “Now about the time that that was published last year, around a million Latino voters in Texas were voting for Trump. Do they all have slave mentality?”

A flustered Crockett responded, “No, and that’s not what that said at all, to be clear. It did not say that every Latino has that type of mentality…No, no, but slave, the ones that vote for people who believe in strong or Trump’s immigration policy. So, so I don’t believe that the people that voted for Trump believe in what they’re actually getting.”
The congresswoman had to tangle with her own words after announcing a long-shot Senate bid on Monday, following news that the Supreme Court had allowed Texas’ new redistricting map to stand, dissolving Crockett’s district into a deep red one she’d have no chance of winning.

While some on the right have begun recirculating old clips of Crockett promoting her far-left policies – dooming her bid before it even starts – leftist CNN hosts are now getting in on the act, giving her a small taste of the intense scrutiny she’ll face going into the midterms.
