A former Brown University student who is now homeless has been credited with helping police find the individual accused of murdering two students and shooting several others last weekend.

The vagrant man, who goes by John, posted on Reddit to sound the alarm about a suspicious person he saw hours before the deadly shooting.
John said he saw the suspect inside a bathroom in the university and followed him, asking the gunman, “Why are you circling the block?”
The alleged shooter, Portuguese national Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, ran away from John and asked why he was “harassing” him.
After police released images of the suspect, John posted online, saying he saw the man unlock a grey Nissan with Florida plates near the college.
The homeless hero also called an anonymous police tip line, eventually turning himself into Providence law enforcement after they released images of John as a suspicious person for having been so close to the shooter when he was tailing him.
Detectives later tracked the license plate of the vehicle and examined surveillance footage that led them to a storage facility where they found Valente dead with a gunshot wound.
The FBI announced a $50,000 reward “for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual responsible for the Brown University mass shooting,” on Monday, which should be awarded to the Providence man who tipped off police.
