Image Credit: JOHN THYS / Contributor / Getty On Thursday Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky announced that no elections will be held until security guarantees are acquired, despite Europe largely agreeing to guarantee Ukraine’s security already. Zelensky, whose term expired in May 2024, is holding onto power under martial law regulations which grant him permanent rule throughout the duration of the conflict. He ruled out holding elections on numerous different occasions previously.
February 24 is a special date. Even if there were an intention or relevant steps toward bringing certain elections forward, I believe it would be an utterly stupid idea to use such a date to talk about politics. This is a very serious date – four years of war. It’s a large number of people who have defended our state and given their lives. And it is since February 24 that our people have been defending their country every day. I could never do such a thing.
Therefore, February 24 cannot be used to announce any elections – any elections at all. This is not about individuals. No elections can be announced on February 24.
As for announcing elections in general, I’ll repeat: first security, then politics. We can move toward elections when all the relevant security guarantees are in place. The issue of elections has been raised by various partners. Ukraine itself has never raised it. But of course, we are ready for elections. It’s very simple to do: establish a ceasefire – and there will be elections. Meaning, it is a matter of security.
The Dictator has been seeking security guarantees for some time now, it being a key part of his failed 2024 “victory plan” which would have resulted in continued and escalated war against Russia via commitments which could be categorized as security guarantees.
According to RT, the Ukrainian ruler demanded that Ukraine be able to immediately join NATO, receive Western assistance to make Ukraine’s offensive capabilities more powerful, including access to foreign-made long-range weapons to strike Russia with, continued Ukrainian invasions of Russia, a ‘comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrence package’, joint [Western] protection of the critical resources of Ukraine, as well as Ukraine sharing it’s ‘battlefield experience’ with Western countries to ‘strengthen NATO’ against Russia. Three more points are classified.
“Most likely, it’s the same American plan to keep fighting a war with us to the last Ukrainian, which Zelensky has camouflaged and now calls a peace plan,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said according to RT on Wednesday.
In January The Financial Times reported that unnamed sources told them the U.S. set a condition for Ukraine to receive security guarantees from Washington – cede territory to Russia in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.
“The Trump administration has indicated to Ukraine that U.S. security guarantees are contingent on Kyiv first agreeing a peace deal that would likely involve ceding the Donbas region to Russia, according to eight people familiar with talks,” The Financial Times said. “Washington has also suggested it would promise Ukraine more weaponry to bolster its peacetime army if — as the price of peace with Russia — it agreed to withdraw its forces from the parts of the eastern region it controls, two of the people said.”
The White House however rejected this claim, stating that The Financial Times is allowing malicious actors to lie under the protection of anonymity.
“This is totally false — the U.S.’s only role in the peacemaking process is to bring both sides together to make a deal,” deputy White House press secretary Anna Kelly said. “It’s a shame that The Financial Times is letting malicious actors lie anonymously in order to muck up the peace process, which is in a great place after this weekend’s historic trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi.”
Europe’s Coalition of the Willing seeks to unite in the fight against Russia, a de-facto security guarantee for Ukraine. This however appears to not be sufficient enough for the Dictator to hold elections.
In March 2025 a temporary ceasefire was held with the hope that it could spur a snap election, but the Dictator refused to relinquish power. In November 2024 Zelensky addressed this issue by pointing toward the martial law he continues as the justification for his reign continuing. These actions have caused President Donald Trump to call Zelensky a “dictator without elections.”
Over the last day and into the next, Zelensky has been meeting with Europeans to talk up military commitments and acquire weapons to continue the war, effectively getting the very security guarantees which will allow him to continue the conflict that allows him to stay in power under martial law – a self-licking ice cream cone.
On Friday he said:
Europe needs an independent and strong defense industry, in partnership with the United States. I think that Europe must be independent, with strong security guarantees.
I’m sure that Ukraine is a strong partner, a good partner, with real experience because of this war, tragic war. But we are ready to share it, we are ready to be partners, we are ready to support Europe, and of course we count on having strategic partners such as Germany and other European nations.
We can share our experience, and I’m happy that during this Munich Security Conference we are opening co-production. And we will speak about security. Our view will be presented tomorrow.
I discussed joint weapons production projects and diplomatic work with @bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz.
Further military assistance, additional contributions to the PURL initiative, diplomatic efforts to achieve peace, and energy support were the key topics discussed with the Chancellor.
We also addressed the first major results of Ukrainian-German joint drone production. It is precisely this kind of cooperation that makes our countries stronger. We discussed how to scale it up.
I thank Germany for its contribution to saving lives during Russia’s full-scale war, in particular the supply of air defense systems that have saved thousands and thousands of our people’s lives.
Today in Munich, Germany. An important day, and there will be new steps toward our shared security – that of Ukraine and Europe. On the agenda is the first joint Ukrainian-German drone production enterprise, as well as bilateral and multilateral meetings with partners.
We need more of our joint production, more of our resilience, more coordination and effectiveness of our shared security architecture in Europe. The most significant thing we can achieve together is ending the war with a dignified peace and creating reliable security guarantees for Ukraine and for all of Europe – so that no one in Europe is afraid of being left without protection.
Thank you to everyone who is helping!
Thank you to the people of the United Kingdom, @Keir_Starmer and @JohnHealey_MP for the new and timely air defense package worth over £500 million. I am also grateful that the UK has joined the PURL program with a substantial contribution of £150 million, which will allow us to purchase additional American-made weapons, primarily air defenses.
Russian attacks on our people, energy, and other life-sustaining infrastructure continue unabated, and each strike can inflict significant damage. Therefore, such leadership and support are especially vital now, amid the winter cold. Thank you!
