Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan is facing up to six years in prison after being charged with obstruction and concealment for helping an illegal immigrant evade ICE officers seeking to arrest the individual at a courthouse earlier this year.
According to ICE, Dugan showed 31-year-old Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz a back door that led to a public corridor so he could escape the courthouse after she told immigration officers they needed a judicial warrant to arrest the suspect.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Alexander told the jury during day one of the trial on Monday, “They did not expect a judge, sworn to uphold the law, would divide their arrest team and impede their efforts to do their jobs.”
Dugan also reportedly told her court reporter that she “would take the heat” for helping Flores-Ruiz evade arrest.
Dugan’s attorney Steven Biskupic said the judge did not mean to obstruct the agents and was instead “following policy when she directed federal agents to Chief Judge Carl Ashley’s office.”
After fleeing the courthouse, Flores-Ruiz ran from ICE officers who chased him down and made an arrest despite the judge’s attempts to help him escape.
In November, DHS announced the illegal alien was deported after pleading “no contest” for battery in county court.
Dozens of leftist demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse on Monday for Judge Dugan’s trial.
