WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Prominent far-left Democrat U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California says she is “working … at the national level” to continue “gender transition” procedures on troubled minors, despite the harms to youth and the issue’s key role in ousting her party from national power.
Fox News reports that, during a tour of the San Francisco VA Medical Center, the 85-year-old former House speaker took a question on the state of so-called “gender-affirming care” in California in light of the Trump administration’s actions against the practice.
“That is something I’m working for at the national level, and we are hoping we can have gender-affirming care for our trans kids,” Pelosi answered. “It’s a sad thing for us … I don’t know what effect we can have nationally with what we have going on in the White House and in Congress.”
Given that President Donald Trump heads the executive branch and Republicans hold both chambers of Congress, it was not immediately clear what “work” she could do on the issue. Pelosi’s office later told Fox she was referring to her work for a multi-state lawsuit Democrats launched against the Trump administration’s crackdown on the practice.
Though Pelosi identifies as a Catholic, the Catholic Church condemns gender ideology and transgender body mutilation. Pelosi was prohibited from Holy Communion by her bishop, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, in 2022 due to her years of pro-abortion activism, but the leftist Democrat has boasted that she has continued to receive the Eucharist anyway.
One of Trump’s earliest executive actions upon returning to office was an order that ends all federal financial support for “transition” procedures on minors, rescinds or amends all of the Biden health bureaucracy’s past endorsements of underage “transitioning,” and calls for a review of the medical literature on the subject, enforcing all existing restrictions on underage “transitioning,” and taking regulatory action to “end” the practice to the greatest extent possible under current law.
Direct legality of youth “transitions” is currently a matter for individual states to regulate, but the administration has also also announced it is investigating institutions that perpetuate it for related crimes that do fall under federal jurisdiction, such as misrepresentation and Medicaid fraud.
The effort has prompted announcements by Yale Medicine, Kaiser Permanente, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, UChicago Medicine, and other medical institutions that they are halting their “transition” procedures on minors – even in California, where state officials have urged health entities not to comply with federal gender directives.
A large body of evidence shows that “affirming” gender confusion carries serious harms, especially when done with impressionable children who lack the mental development, emotional maturity, and life experience to consider the long-term ramifications of the decisions being pushed on them, or full knowledge about the long-term effects of life-altering, physically-transformative, and often-irreversible surgical and chemical procedures.
Studies find that more than 80 percent of children suffering gender dysphoria outgrow it on their own by late adolescence and that “reassignment” procedures fail to resolve gender-confused individuals’ heightened tendency to engage in self-harm and suicide – and even exacerbate it, including by reinforcing their confusion and neglecting the actual root causes of their mental strife.
Yet Democrats under former President Joe Biden aggressively sought to support the full range of “gender-transition” practices and LGBT “pride” more broadly. Trump’s election was broadly seen, in part, as a repudiation of that focus.
In the wake of the 2024 election, polling by the pro-Democrat firm Blueprint found that the statement “Kamala Harris is focused more on cultural issues like transgender issues rather than helping the middle class” was the third-biggest reason for why overall voters chose not to vote for her and the number one reason why swing voters rejected her and voted instead to return Trump to office.
Sixty-six percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for gender transitions, according to an April Cygnal poll, and Pew Research finds that 66 percent support limiting athletic participation to actual members of a team’s designated sex, 56 percent support prohibiting transition procedures on minors, and 53 percent oppose forcing insurance companies to cover transition services. Another June Gallup poll found that not even half of Democrats support letting males compete in female sports.
