Eleven people were stabbed at a Michigan Walmart late on Saturday afternoon.
The attack took place at a store in Traverse County, Michigan.
Eleven people were reported as being treated for stab wounds at a local hospital, six of whom were in critical condition.
The Gran Traverse Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a 42-year-old man entered the store at around 4.45pm local time and began stabbing people with a folding knife.
A sheriff’s deputy was aided by members of the public in apprehending the man, who was then taken into custody.
The suspect is believed to be a Michigan resident.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was monitoring the situation closely.
“I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City,” she said on X.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said, “FBI personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of the attacks at the Walmart.”
The mass stabbing comes barely a month after a gunman stormed a community church in Wayne, Michigan. He injured a security guard before being killed by two members of the congregation.
“A parishioner struck the gunman with his vehicle as the gunman shot the vehicle repeatedly,” police chief Ryan Strong told reporters on June 22.
“At least two staff members shot the gunman, causing the fatal wounds.”
